AeroGarden is Going Out of Business

AeroGarden is going out of business. As big fans of the product, we wanted to share with you what this could mean going forward for other fans of their hydroponic systems.

I received the dreaded email from AeroGarden in early October that the company was going out of business. We have been big fans since early in the pandemic when my dad bought us our first garden as a Christmas present. Now that he has passed, his gift makes me smile even more than the rapidly growing Swiss Chard.

Once I got over the shock of AeroGraden going out of business, I promptly went to the old website to try to stock up on empty seed pods so that I could keep the system going with our harvested seeds. No luck – by the time I tried, the site was no longer offering products for purchase directly through them. But their email revealed how to get supplies now and once they are formally gone.

How to Buy AeroGarden Supplies

When you go to the old AeroGarden.com site, the product purchases are now linked to their Amazon site. You’ll notice that many of their products have pictures next to them that say “currently unavailable.” I have to assume that this means they will never be available. However, many kits and light systems are still part of their inventory and ready for purchase.

You can also go to Amazon and buy from the AeroGarden store or through resellers for those products AeroGarden does not support. Their email also indicates that “the AeroGarden app, which supports AeroGarden Wi-Fi gardens and Indoor Grow Lights via bluetooth technology, will be available for an extended period of time.” That’s excellent news, as their indoor grow lights are terrific.

Swiss chard was growing already by September 29th, about two weeks after seeding.

Long-Term Solutions After AeroGarden Closes

While AeroGarden doesn’t specifically recommend third-party sellers of their products, they mention that they exist on various platforms. I’ll be testing some out on Amazon and Etsy.com. If you jump in, be careful. Not all generic pods fit all of the AeroGarden trays. Also, you should ask for the dates of their seed kits because they don’t last forever.

I actually have two gardens from AeroGarden right now, so I’m sticking with the product unless I really run up against a supply problem. However, I understand that several great vertical hydroponic gardens may be worth a look at in the future.

I will leave the comments open on this blog if you want to share problems and solutions to AeroGarden’s closure. Good luck!
