I love apple pie, so it’s no surprise that when fall arrives in Los Angeles, I want to make a classic apple pie recipe. Yesterday, I shared a flaky vegan pie crust recipe, and you got an early look at the final pie. I went with a lattice crust for interest, but you’ll probably just want to make a straight double crust, if this is your first apple pie (plus, double crusts cut better). So, if you are curious about how to make an easy, classic apple pie recipe, that also happens to be vegan, keep reading.
Apple Pie Recipe Ingredients
5-7 Tart Apples (I used Honeycrisps – larger varieties only require 5 apples for the pie)
1 Cup Sugar
2 Tablespoons Unbleached All-Purpose Flour (I used King Arthur)
2 Teaspoons Cinnamon
½ Teaspoon Nutmeg
Dash of Salt
Pastry for Lattice Crust 9-inch Apple Pie
Apple Pie Recipe Steps
Step 1 Preheat oven to 400 degrees F
Step 2 Peel the apples and slice them into small, thin pieces. I like them very thin for layering, and they cook faster. However, if you prefer chopped apples, that works too.
Step 3 Whisk sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a large bowl.
Step 4 Toss together the apple slices and all the dry ingredients.
Step 5 Line a pie plate with your pie crust (steps can be found here).
Step 6 Add your apple pie filling onto the pie crust.
Step 7 Add your preferred top crust (I went with lattice).
Step 8 Place the pie plate on the middle of the middle oven rack and bake for 45-50 minutes (pies without a full top crust might cook faster).
Step 9 Your pie filling may be bubbling, so take care to allow it to cool before serving it.
