Fall decor ideas for the home are spinning around my brain. Every interior designer has some notion about how to embrace the fall aesthetic. From planning a bedroom refresh to creating a book nook (possibly my favorite idea for autumn), there are tons of great options that fit all budgets, skill levels, and sustainability goals. Read on for a list of fall decor ideas for the home that have captured my imagination — hopefully, they spark something for you, too!
Embrace Earthy Tones for Fall 2024
Earthy tones are always among my favorite fall decor ideas, and this year is no different. However, how I’m embracing it in my design work has shifted. I still love chocolate browns and pumpkin oranges, but I’m incorporating new hues. Olive green is a favorite right now — especially when paired with a rich, textured fabric like performance velvet. The look can ground a room and create a wonderfully cozy atmosphere that will take you comfortably into winter (and beyond).
You don’t have to splurge on investment furniture pieces to embrace this fall aesthetic. You can bring in throw blankets, accent pillows, or new table linens in autumnal shades like mustard yellow, burnt sienna, or moody greens to make this fall trend work for you.
Add Metallics for a Rich Fall Decor Idea
Incorporating metallics into your home decor for fall 2024 may seem contradictory to the recommendations for a warmer fall aesthetic. We’re thinking beyond silver and gold. Bronze finishes and copper accents can easily be added to kitchens, tablescapes, and living rooms.
You don’t need to go so far as to change out your kitchen cabinet hardware (although bronze pulls would look amazing). Instead, consider adding a copper or bronze vase as part of a centerpiece. Swap silver accents for bronze pieces for your fireplace mantel. Use bronze serving trays, show off vintage, thrifted copper pitchers, or take the plunge on a hammered bronze side table you’ve been eyeing. We are seeing this trend pop up everywhere as people search for fall decor ideas for the home.
Tell a Story with Vintage Finds
If you know my style, you know how much I love bringing vintage or antique accents forward in design refreshes. I love pieces with a real sense of history. If you have furniture pieces from your parents or grandparents, this is the time to put them front and center. Why? Quality pieces that have stood the test of time and tell a story are hard to resist. Please don’t paint them, though. Unless they are beyond saving, it makes my heart ache when I see people painting antique wood furniture.
Even if you haven’t been lucky enough to inherit furniture, there are tons of great consignment shops, vintage markets, and flea markets across the country where you can find amazing deals on pieces that will become part of your story. Even if you don’t have a big budget for a large, curved antique sofa (or room in a small apartment), you can pick up antique frames, candlesticks, mirrors, and smaller furniture pieces for a song.
Bring the Outdoors Inside
Bringing the outdoors inside is not just a decor style for the warmer months. A woven rattan storage basket in a dark color is an easy and affordable way to use organic textures while embracing the fall aesthetic. We love handcrafted vases — and not just because we are still obsessed with “The Great Pottery Throw Down” (we are).
Don’t forget botanicals. There dozens of beautiful fall flowers that would shine on tables, fireplace mantels, and sideboards. Vibrant rudbeckias, nasturtiums, New England asters, zinnias, and marigolds are some of the options that can grace your gardens, all-season porches, and living spaces.
Transition to Moody Palettes in Fall 2024
I am a moody palette person. Among the fall decor ideas for the home I most love, embracing a moody palette is at the top of the list. Navy blue is having a moment on kitchen cabinets. Charcoal is popping up everywhere, from half-bath walls to accent rugs. Even dark plum is having a moment on walls, bedding, and home exteriors. My personal choice for the perfect fall hue remains a dramatic, dark green like “Hidden Falls” or “Under the Sea” by Benjamin Moore.
Create a Book Nook Anywhere in Your Home
Books are always in for me, but I am seeing “book nook fever” sweep every designers wish list and Pinterest. Yes, it is one of the most searched fall decor ideas for the home in 2024. I’m here for it.
You don’t need to have a significant number of books in any one place to create a nook. This fall aesthetic can be achieved just by stacking five of your favorite coffee table books next to a good reading light or a candle. The mere idea of it inspires someone to curl up and read. And even though it goes against my minimalist tendencies for bedroom design, I love seeing a stack of books on a nightstand.
I’m also someone who still adores physical cookbooks. If you have a raised shelves above your kitchen windows or an open shelf on an island, you can create a kitchen book nook in seconds that also allows you to have easy access to recipes that won’t disappear with a screensaver or site ad freeze.
How about you? Are there any fall decor ideas for the home that are making you smile?
